Our online MSW concentration in Children, Youth and Families is uniquely focused on supporting children and families within diverse groups and populations.

Courses combine synchronous and asynchronous  – which means you can work around your busy life – with opportunities to engage and collaborate with faculty and classmates. Montclair’s small classes allow for individualized attention every step of the program.  Experienced practicum instructors and liaisons will work closely with you to guide your placement experience. Our faculty are dedicated to supporting the success of our students with strong partnerships with agencies throughout the state of New Jersey. MSW Practicum

Practicum education is an integral part of graduate social work education, providing a unique opportunity for students to integrate classroom learning with a supervised practice experience in various social work settings. Online MSW students complete two practicum experiences. The first practicum is 15 hours per week for a total of 420 hours. The second practicum is 21 hours per week for a total of 580 hours. Students can expect to complete practicum hours during daytime, business hours from Monday to Friday. Practicum placements will occur on-site, where students will have the opportunity to interact with diverse populations and implement direct practice skills.

Students will have the opportunity to complete their practicum placements at a wide range of settings including but not limited to mental health centers, non-profit agencies, school settings, hospitals and much more. Students employed in a social service setting may also apply for an employment based practicum placement, which provides a unique opportunity to complete practicum requirements at your current source of employment.

  • Your time commitments: The program is academically rigorous, emotionally challenging, and time consuming because we are preparing you to work with people who are depending on you to be an ethical, competent, culturally sensitive, and responsive social worker. You should plan to spend at least 3 hours per week on each course in addition to your other responsibilities. Courses in the online MSW program are offered every seven weeks all year long. You will take one or two courses during each seven week period. The online program is designed to be completed in three years.
    • You will complete two practicum experiences during the program, almost all of them require you to be in person at a social service agency. You must have weekday availability for 15 hours across two-three days to complete your first practicum experience and 21 hours across three-four days to complete your second practicum experience. There are very few evening and weekend practicum placements.

The Department of Social Work and Child Advocacy at Â鶹Ai»»Á³ University is a community of interdisciplinary scholars and practitioners who prepare undergraduate and graduate students to be leaders in the promotion of child and family wellbeing. Guided by the principles of social, economic, and racial justice, we combine the fields of psychology, social work, and law to improve lives at every stage of human development.
